Patrick M. Kochanek, MD, is the Ake N. Grenvik Professor of Critical Care Medicine; Director of the Safar Center for Resuscitation Research; and Professor and Vice Chairman of Critical Care Medicine at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine.  He is also Professor of Anesthesiology, Pediatrics, Bioengineering and Clinical and Translational Science.  He has a long track-record of investigation in traumatic and ischemic brain injury and neurointensive care and is funded by the US Army, NIH, and Laerdal Foundation.  His research has focused on targeting the secondary brain injury response in traumatic brain injury and cardiac arrest and the development of novel therapies.  He has >430 citations on PubMed and was recently identified by ISI as the most prolific author in the field of TBI in the past 15 years.  He is PI of Operation Brain Trauma Therapy for the United States Army and has been PI for 14 years of a T-32 titled “Pediatric Neurointensive Care and Resuscitation Research.”  He is also funded by a number of other grants from the NIH.  He has mentored numerous trainees, many of whom have gone on to receive independent funding from NIH and careers of national prominence. He is Editor-in-Chief of Pediatric Critical Care Medicine and is on the editorial board of numerous journals in the field of traumatic and ischemic brain injury.  Dr. Kochanek received the Distinguished Investigator Award from the American College of Critical Care Medicine in 2007, the Critical Care Distinguished Career Award from the American Academy of Pediatrics in 2008, gave the Baaken Lecture at the Cleveland Clinic in 2008, and was named Master of Critical Care Medicine by the American College of Critical Care Medicine in its inaugural class, and was the inaugural recipient of the Vidyassagar Award for the field of pediatric critical care medicine from the American College of Medicine in 2015.
